1983: Reagan called the USSR the ‘evil empire’

It was one of President Reagan’s greatest moments.

It happened during a speech to a convention of the National Association of Evangelicals in Florida. He referred to the USSR as “the evil empire,” drawing a sharp contrast between freedom and communism.

President Reagan was known as “the great communicator.” This is because he spoke from the heart, as he did on this day in 1983.
