A version of ‘Guantanamera’ Cuban exiles didn’t expect to hear

Back in the spring and early summer of 1966 we were completing our second year in “el exilio.” Our family had survived another Wisconsin winter and looking forward to buying a car, a white Ford Galaxy with an extra radio speaker in the back. It was in that car that we heard The Sandpipers and their version of “Guantanamera.” I can still remember my mother’s face when the song played on the radio.
