Man arrested by Cuban police for possession of powdered milk is beaten to death

In communist Cuba, transporting half a sack of powdered milk is considered possession of an illegal substance and warrants arrest and a beating so brutal, it kills you. This is nothing new in Cuba, where the police act with impunity, following the orders of the Castro family dictatorship.

Cuban man from Baracoa beaten to death by police

Cuban police delivered a deadly beating to a Cuban man from Baracoa who was carrying half a sack of powdered milk, according to the information revealed by the Cubalex organization.

On Tuesday, September 26, Elio Norkis Sanamé Durán, a resident of the Joa neighborhood in Baracoa, was detained by the police at the Miel Bridge in that area while he was carrying with him the powdered milk.

According to information shared on social media by Cubalex, the officers handcuffed him and took him to the station of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) where, immobilized by the handcuffs, they pepper-sprayed his face and several police officers beat him.

Several sources confirmed the man’s screams could be heard from outside the police station.

After the assault, he was taken to the General Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Hospital in Baracoa, where he died from a heart attack, according to the medical assessment.

Images of the corpse shared on Facebook by Cuban activists show the beatings received by the man at the hands of the regime’s enforcers, which caused his death.

Up to this point, the authorities have not commented on the deadly beating.

After the case was known on social media by activists and independent journalists, dozens of people who knew Elio Norkis described him as a good, calm man who had never harmed anyone.

These cases of abuse by Cuban authorities are not unprecedented on the island.

In early 2023, an 18-year-old Cuban, Aiser Roque Rivero, died while detained in a PNR station in the city of Placetas, Villa Clara province.

The young man’s father blamed the authorities of the police unit and considered it a murder, after government officials claimed it was a suicide attempt.
