Cuba’s infant mortality rate rises by 82%

Castro Inc. has always loved to report low infant mortality rates, attributing them to its free health care system. And the world has responded by heaping praise and admiration on Castro, Inc.. Well . . . those days are over, Mildred. During the past four years that infant mortality rate has skyrocketed, especially in the eastern end of Cuba. Keeping in mind that these are government figures, one should assume that the real death rate is much higher than the one being reported.

Loosely translated from Periodico Cubano

The infant mortality rate in Cuba during 2023 was 7.1 deaths per thousand live births, which represents a worsening of the indicator if the year 2018 is taken as a reference, where according to official data from the Ministry of Public Health the indicator was 3.9.

Five years ago there was no worsening of the economic crisis that the country is currently experiencing as a result of the inefficient management of the communist authorities. The coronavirus pandemic in 2020 hit the health system hard with a medication crisis and lack of attention to those on board.

The shortage of doctors and the scarcity of food prevent pregnant women from having a healthy pregnancy, which also affects the survival expectations of newborns.

Despite everything, the year 2023 marked an improvement compared to 2022, as 74 fewer babies died, however Cuba can no longer display the rates that in the past were compared to first world nations. The best global data continues to be in the countries of the European Union and the Far East, with Slovenia and Singapore at the top (1.5) and Spain and Portugal closing the list of the top 10 (2.4).

For decades, Cuba had maintained an infant mortality rate of less than 5 per thousand. However, over the past three years, the rate has consistently exceeded the 7 threshold.

Within the country there are important differences with provinces such as Havana and Santiago de Cuba, which experience infant mortality rates above the national average. In the Cuban capital there were 7.9 deaths per thousand live births and in eastern Santiago it was higher with 8. Although the worst were Guantánamo with 9 and Mayabeque with 9.1.

  1. Just part of the reset to make Cuba an ever more dysfunctional third-world shithole. This will eventually result in the savages becoming virtual livestock, much easier and cheaper to control. Thus, more profits for the “revolutionary” elite. A win-win.
