Cuban dissident rapper and political prisoner ‘El Osorbo’ jumped by 4 inmates, brutally beaten

Four inmates at the prison where rapper Maykel “El Osorbo” Castillo is serving a nine-year sentence for challenging the communist regime left the prisoner of conscience bloodied after a brutal beating. This is a common occurrence in the Castro dictatorship’s gulags, where political prisoners are violently assaulted by common prisoners either at the direction of the communist regime or while it looks the other way.

Dangerous situation for Maykel Osorbo after assault in prison is denounced

Cuban rapper and political prisoner Maykel Osorbo Castillo sent a message from prison indicating the dangerous situation he is facing there after being assaulted by four inmates last week.

A message posted on his Facebook profile “Maykel Osorbo 349” states that “Maykel’s situation at this moment is very dangerous” and shows a message sent by the musician through a brief phone call.

“Sometimes losing means winning, violence is not right when we serve an unjust sentence… people like me, who know they are trying to harm us at all times, we have to have the ability to see all possible scenarios and not make the mistake of giving a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” Maykel Osorbo stated from prison.

At the end of March, the dissident and co-author of the song “Homeland and Life” was in solitary confinement and cut off from communications due to his ongoing confrontations over his rights with the prison oppressors.

On April 18, activist Anamely Ramos confirmed he had been assaulted in prison by four inmates.

“They called from the prison to say that four inmates cornered Maykel and even drew blood. A guy named Bemba and others,” Ramos stated on the social network X.

In 2022, Maykel “Osorbo” was sentenced to nine years in prison for alleged acts of contempt for the symbols of the homeland, disobedience, defamation of institutions and organizations, heroes and martyrs, assault, resistance, and public disorder, said a statement from the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Cuba.

Several international organizations have joined together to call for the release of Maykel and Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, who remain in maximum-security prisons in Pinar del Río and Artemisa, respectively.
