Crying in Argentina: Obama’s hypocritical duplicity at its very worst

President Barack Obama began his final day in Argentina with a visit to a memorial honoring the victims of Argentina’s ‘Dirty War’ 40 years ago. He’s seen here with his counterpart from Argentina, Mauricio Macri, making a tribute to those killed by the military dictatorship

When he paid a visit to Raul Castro’s Kingdom, the current occupant of the White House said absolutely nothing about the hundreds of thousands of victims of the Castro regime.

And he did nothing, absolutely nothing, that could be interpreted as a tribute to the suffering of the Cuban people.

So, what does he do in Argentina?

He pays tribute to the victims of Argentina’s “military dictatorship” from forty years ago and says “we cannot forget the past.”

And –of course — journalists dredge up funereal images of “death and destruction” when speaking  of Argentina’s 1976 “military coup” but never, ever, make mention of the horrors caused by Cuba’s 1959 “military coup” or its 57-year-old “military junta.”

DARK TIMES: A period that saw the brutal military-run government in Argentina engage in violence against its own people, 20,000 names are listed on the Monument to the Victims of State Terrorism in the park. Another 10,000 slots are left open for unidentified victims

The message is clear, and the images eloquent: leftist military dictatorships are praiseworthy and have no victims (and can’t ever be called “dictatorships”); rightist military dictatorships are “brutal” and evil and their victims deserve attention.

Aah, the wonders of the Ministry of Truth: far, far more splendid than Orwell could ever imagine!

President Barack Obama began his final day in Argentina with a visit to a memorial honoring the victims of Argentina’s ‘Dirty War’ 40 years ago.

In remarks at Buenos Aires’ Remembrance Park today, Parque de la Memoria, Obama reflected on the death and destruction that came along with Argentina’s 1976 military coup and said, ‘A memorial like this speaks the responsibility that we all have.’

‘We cannot forget the past.’

  1. But of course. He said nothing in Cuba because nobody there officially admits the “revolution” ever harmed a fly or committed any crime, and practically nobody outside Cuba does either, except “those people,” who are known to be hysterical reactionaries with “hate fantasies.” And this is with Macri as president; if it had been Cretina Kirchner or one of her crowd, I expect he would have been pressed (or encouraged) to go further.

And if you think Obama’s bad, what about the Argentine pope, who’s surely expressed massive sorrow for THESE victims and condemnation of THESE crimes, but has been completely silent about the victims and crimes of Castro, Inc.? Talk about Obama having a papal “dispensation” for hypocrisy, or worse.

  2. Doing this in Argentina is expected and probably required by protocol, though Obama is no doubt happy to oblige, and of course nobody finds fault with it. Doing the exact same thing in a future free and democratic Cuba, however, would be seen and treated differently. Cubans are supposed to forgive and FORGET, hence the “reconciliation” meme, or they will be derided as “bitter clingers” who are vindictive and “full of hate.” Insisting on justice will be considered obsessive and in very bad taste at best, and those who actually dare to try to “get their stuff back” will get anything but sympathy. The double standard will never end, so we might as well flip everyone the bird and just do our thing.

  3. Remember Batista’s “20,000 dead”? It was a deliberate fabrication, 10 or more times the actual number, but JFK swallowed it hook, line and sinker, and the lie was upheld for a very long time. Same goes for wildly inflated numbers put out by the New York Times, a source I would never take at face value on ANYTHING that could be influenced by its obvious political agenda. But actual numbers aside, the matter is very simple: it is NOT about righteousness, justice or humanity; it is about which SIDE the victims and especially the criminals are on, and THAT is the critical issue, if not the only one. In other words, the world is full of shit, and that’s not at all subtle.

  4. So maybe I finally get it: the reason so little care, if any, is taken over “optics” when it comes to Cuba, as VERY graphically demonstrated by the pope, Obama and MANY other prominent figures, is that Cubans are evidently deemed too stupid, too insignificant and/or too undeserving to merit being treated with consideration, let alone respect.

This would explain the practically complete absence of restraint or discretion, and the relaxed and unguarded display of a very high comfort level with serious evil, as if that were completely natural and reasonable, and there was no need to worry about offending its victims. Maybe we’re just regarded as lower life forms, sort of like when people do things they never would around other people but don’t think twice about doing around household animals.

I keep thinking of Shylock’s “Hath not a Jew eyes?” speech. Maybe he didn’t get it, either.
