The Cuban government made it clear that its priority at the IV Nation and Emigration Conference, to be held in Havana on November 18 and 19, is for Cubans residing abroad to invest in the Island.
When reporting on the agenda of the first meeting of this type in 19 years, the general director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Living Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), Ernesto Soberón, told the official press that the emphasis will be on ” opportunities”, with which the Government intends to attract more dollars from the diaspora.
To the remittances that emigrants send so that their relatives in Cuba do not die of hunger, the regime wants them to add investments in the country.
“On the agenda will be the links between Cuba and its compatriots abroad and the perspectives of that relationship; migration issues; culture and identity – each with its peculiarities -, economic development and investments, with emphasis on opportunities for the participation of Cubans in the socioeconomic processes that take place in the country,” the official told the state media Juventud Rebelde.
“After 19 years of not having held an event of this type, attendees will also be updated on everything that has been done in Cuba in terms of economic development and the transformations carried out, which are what open the possibilities for their participation in our economy,” Soberón added.
According to the words of the MINREX official, at the event there will be no shortage of complaints from the regime about the US embargo, which it blames for the misery of Cubans residing in the country, despite the fact that the United States is today the sixth country with the highest volume of exports to Cuba, as revealed by the Cuban Statistical Yearbook for 2022, prepared by the state National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).
