In the last few hours, promising outfielder Maikol Rodríguez left Cuba to pursue his dream to play in Major League Baseball. The news was confirmed by baseball journalist Francys Romero.
Rodríguez, only 16 years old and hailing from Sancti Spíritus, was part of the Cuba Under-15 team in the 2022 World Championship for that category. Recognized for his height, speed, and batting skills, the young player has demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age.
In 2023, despite still being eligible for the Under-15 category, Maikol played in the Under-18 category, standing out as one of the most promising talents in his class. He participated in the Under-15 Pre-World Cup in Venezuela, where he achieved a .304 average with two doubles, a triple, and two RBIs.
According to Romero’s statistics, he is the 18th player from the Cuban Under-15 team who has decided to emigrate in search of new opportunities.
Regarding the unstoppable exodus of young Cuban talents, in just the first month of 2024, several have joined this massive migration. Among them are Yandro Hernández, batting leader in the 2023 Under-18 National Championship, Jorge Luis Manzolo, a pitching prospect, and Luis Enrique Gurriel Jr., only 12 years old. All of them have chosen to settle in the Dominican Republic with the goal of building a future in professional baseball.
